Hi All, As usual it’s been a busy time Seomra Bán in the run up to the Easter holidays. We were learning about Spring and the changes this season brings. One of the exciting things we did while learning about Spring was plant beetroot seeds in little pots. Our plan is to transplant them into the school gardens when they are ready. Fingers crossed we will have some brilliant beetroot in the weeks to come. We also explored the new life that is born during this season and learned about what both new animals and plants need to thrive and grow. After Easter we will be focusing on life on the farm and so this gave us a good base from which to start from as we discussed lots of the animals that start their life on the farm. To link to our theme of spring in art we made baby chicks, showing them cracking out of their eggs just in time to celebrate Easter. Previous to this we used our getting along skills during our art lessons to work in small groups to produce posters inspired by James Rizzi Skyscrapers. We really enjoyed this as they are so colourful and full of expression. It’s amazing what we can do together when we use are getting along skills. ...
December was a busy time in Seomra Bán as we were preparing and performing our winter performance for our families and other members of the school. We worked very hard on learning the words and actions and everybody sang with great enthusiasm. We performed the ‘Chubby Snowman’, ‘Winter Wonderland’ and ‘Let it Snow’. As winter was one of our themes we learned about the type of weather we experience in winter and used various coloured chalks on a black background to design winter scenes to display outside our classroom. We also worked on our ‘getting along’ skills as we worked together to design our class Christmas tree. We all coloured unique stars and placed them all together to create the shape of a tree. It was great team work. In Maths we were working on Place Value for the first time and doing lots of grouping and learning about left overs and ones. We began to exchange groups of counters for soldiers which was lots of fun. We will continue to develop our understanding of Place Value in...
We have had a busy few weeks here in Seomra Bán. We have gone back in time to a prehistoric age to learn about dinosaurs. Our classroom walls have become home to wonderful colourful silhouettes of all sorts of interesting dinosaurs with the favourite being the Tyrannosaurus Rex. We learned a funny poem called ‘The Angry Dinosaur’ and then created and acted out our own “dino dramas”. It was a ROARING success!! This month we also learned about the importance of recycling and how we all play our part. We came up with lots of ways how we can reduce, reuse and recycle in our own homes and classrooms. We imagined that we were working in a recycling centre and examined what things we use every day that could be recycled. We are lucky to have some recycling experts who know exactly what goes in each coloured bin!! In Maths, we have been having great fun learning about Capacity, the amount of space in a hollow container. The children filled various household items such as pots and pans with water and rice. The children first made estimates on how much they believed each container could hold before we got the exact measurement. They really enjoyed the the exercise and we definitely have some budding engineers. ...
Happy New Year from our class. We’ve got straight back to work in Seomra Dheirdre. Our topic this month was Light and Sound. We traced each other’s shadows with chalk We did experiments with sound We made shadow shapes and sketched each others outline We recorded our results We also learned the Rain Song and we sang it for 6th class. It was great fun,...
We have had a busy few months in first class! We learned about the life cycle of a frog, we went on a walk around our area and explored different kinds of houses. We collected bits and pieces for autumn. But we particularly enjoyed learning about dinosaurs and space. We made dinosaurs and fossils out of clay and we made papier maché planets! We enjoyed learning about length in maths. We went all around and we measured everything….including ourselves. 🙂 Watch this space for updates about our class. We learned about space and we made papier maché planets. It was messy work! Then we painted them when they...
This week a number of students from Pobail Scoil Setenta came to visit us as part of a programmer known as Reader Leader. The boys and girls in Seomra Dubh were divided into groups with their very own Reader Leader! They listed to many interesting stories over the week. Children really enjoyed this time. Thank you Pobail Scoil Setanta!...
I hope you all enjoyed the Winter break. It is unfortunate that we find ourselves in
this difficult situation but I am confident that we will survive the challenges we face
and be stronger for it.
As you know we have moved to remote learning and we are currently drawing up our
action plan. All teachers are engaging with their classes through Aladdin this week as
we sort through some IT issues and plan for SEESAW which we will be using after
that. We know that it can be very difficult for some households to manage particularly
as there may be more than one child accessing devices. We don’t want you to be
overwhelmed however. It is important that children stay connected with their learning
and we want to support them as much as we can. With that in mind , we will put up new
ideas and suggestions on the website each week in addition to what teachers will be
We are also contactable at 01 6402418 or firstname.lastname@example.org if we can help in any
